TANEYCOMO

Updated 1/18/01

Temperature: 35-39 Level:

Report by River Run Outfitters

If anyone likes midge fly fishing for trout, now is the time to be on the water! We fished Saturday, Sunday, and Monday a Wednesday. Midge hatches have been coming off Lake Taneycomo in Branson, Mo. in the late morning (when the sun is out) or in the afternoon on cloudy days. Fish either midge larvae such as the biota miracle midge in white, gray or olive, or check the water for the color of the midges. They have been black, brown, tan or gray so be prepared with one of these colors in a soft hackle or midge emerged pattern in sizes 20 or 22. Wednesday I fished for two hours and caught 15 fish on a black midge emerged soft hackle size 20. The fished ranged in size from 12" to 14." I hate to admit the number of strikes I missed. Saturday and Sunday we fished gray and black emerged soft hackles in the early afternoon and caught over 100 rainbows in the 12" to 16" range. When the fish turned off of these patterns, we switched to size 12 olive woolly buggers (weighted) and caught over 70 trout. Monday morning we fished olive woolly buggers and caught 25 in about two hours. All of this type of fishing is of course no indicator surface/sub surface using 6x tippet and letting the fly sink for a count of 3 seconds then stripping slowly about 10 inches, pause about 2 seconds and repeat. When they hit it, they really hit it! Using this small of hook you are bound to miss a lot of strikes but what fun.
